Joint Task Force Conducts Sweep of Illegal Tour Guides at Mount Bromo

Tour guides should possess officially recognized guiding certificates, valid at the local, provincial, national, and even international levels. This regulation is crucial to eliminate unqualified or "unofficial" guides who often lack sufficient skills, especially in speaking foreign languages, and fail to meet professional service standards. In the end, this only diminishes the overall quality and credibility of tour guide resources

Probolinggo, SERU.co.id – A joint monitoring team from East Java conducted an inspection of tour guides at the Mount Bromo tourist site on Sunday, May 25, 2025. The team, comprising the East Java Department of Culture and Tourism and the East Java Regional Board of the Indonesian Tourist Guide Association (DPD HPI Jatim), discovered approximately 40 guides operating without proper legal authorization or licenses.

Sujay Asmed, Chairman of DPD HPI Jatim, stated to SERU.co.id that the data collection, monitoring, and regulation of tour guides were carried out in collaboration with the East Java Regional Police's Tourism Police and the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS). The inspection at Mount Bromo aimed to verify the legality of tour guides leading tourist groups in the East Java region.

“In addition to guide licenses, we also checked for letters of assignment from travel agencies carried by the guides,” he said.

The team also examined tour guide license cards to identify any that had expired. Guides found with expired licenses were advised to promptly renew them through the relevant department using the Jatimjos application. Guides operating without any legal authorization were documented according to their area of specialization.

“We plan to conduct certification programs in collaboration with the provincial tourism department and issue licenses accordingly,” he added.

Sujay expressed hope that this monitoring activity would ensure that tour guides operating within the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park and throughout East Java are licensed and legally authorized. He also urged travel agencies to employ guides who possess the necessary legal credentials and licenses.

“Licensed guides are trained in standard operating procedures for handling tourists and have proven competencies,” he emphasized.
