Yadnya Kasada 2025: The Sacred Tenggerese Festival at Mount Bromo

Mount Bromo, one of Indonesia’s most iconic volcanoes, is more than just a tourist destination — it is a sacred site for the Tenggerese people, who each year perform a powerful religious ceremony known as Yadnya Kasada. In 2025, the Yadnya Kasada Festival will be held on June 10–11, drawing pilgrims from across the Tengger region to honor their gods and ancestral spirits.

What is Yadnya Kasada?

Yadnya Kasada (sometimes spelled Kasodo) is a Hindu ritual performed by the Tenggerese community, who are followers of the unique Hindu Dharma tradition surviving in East Java. The ceremony is an expression of gratitude, purification, and sacrifice, where offerings are cast into the crater of Mount Bromo as a tribute to the divine.

According to legend, Roro Anteng and Joko Seger — the mythological ancestors of the Tengger people — made a pact with the gods to be granted children. In return, they promised to offer their last child to Mount Bromo. When the time came, they kept their promise. This tale lives on in the Kasada ceremony, where offerings are still made to the mountain gods. The Yadnya Kasada ceremony consists of a series of traditional rituals that take place over several stages, beginning the night before the 14th day of the Kasada month. Below is the expected sequence of the Kasada 2025 festival activities:

  • 1. Preparation and Cleansing Ritual (June 9–10, 2025)
    - The Tenggerese elders, priests (Dukun), and villagers begin preparations by cleansing themselves spiritually and physically.
    - Sacred heirlooms, offerings, and ceremonial tools are purified in their respective villages.
    - Livestock, crops, food, and other offerings are selected for the ritual.

  • 2. Ceremonial Gathering at Pura Luhur Poten (June 10, 2025, Evening)
    - Pilgrims gather at Pura Luhur Poten, a sacred temple located on the Sea of Sand (Lautan Pasir) at the foot of Mount Bromo.
    - The Adat procession begins with traditional music, prayers, and a ritual dance performance known as Tari Sodoran.
    - Villagers dressed in traditional Tenggerese clothing form a long procession, carrying offerings.

  • 3. Ritual Prayers and Tawur Agung (June 10, 2025, 22:00 – Midnight)
    - Led by the Dukun (Tenggerese priest), the main prayer ceremony (Tawur Agung) is performed to ask for safety, prosperity, and balance between nature and mankind.
    - The Tenggerese priest will bless each offering with mantras and holy water.

  • 4. Main Offering Ritual at Mount Bromo Crater (June 11, 2025, 00:00 – early morning)
    - At midnight, pilgrims hike up to the rim of Mount Bromo's crater.
    - Each family will throw their offerings into the crater, symbolizing gratitude and devotion to the gods.
    - This is the most sacred moment of the entire ceremony. Some locals may even climb down the crater wall to retrieve offerings – a tradition that, though dangerous, reflects local beliefs about spiritual blessing and luck.

  • 5. Closing Ritual and Return to Village (June 11, 2025, Morning)
    - After the offerings are made, the community returns to their villages.
    - A final prayer is recited, marking the end of the Kasada ceremony.
    - The rest of the day is spent in communal gatherings, feasting, and rest
